About the event

Join us in a beautiful ancient woodland to learn the craft of spoon carving with Steve Ridd of Northern Wood Monkey. This is a full day workshop in which you will hone your axe and knife skills and make your very own beautifully crafted spoon from scratch.

No previous woodworking experience is necessary, though those with knowledge of working with wood will still find fresh challenges in the hand carved spoon.

The course will run between 10 am and 4.30 pm and costs £90 per person. Book your ticket here

The joy of spoon carving is that we don't need expensive tools, workshops and work benches. Just our hands and a few simple tools. You will develop skills to take away with you to be able to carve at home, sat outside on warm summers evenings or in front of the fire on those chilly winter nights.

Steve will concentrate on giving you a knowledge of safe grips and cutting techniques with both a straight and bent (hook) knife which are the two that we use to make the spoon. We will also work with a carving axe to split the log and safely 'rough out' the blank that we then carve into your finished spoon.

You will end the day with a spoon of your own and, Steve tells us, an overwhelming desire to carve more spoons!

Steve will supply all the tools you need and a selection of wood to work with. He can also give you information about where to go to buy good tools of your own if you want to take this further.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be in plentiful supply throughout the day, though you may want to bring your own choice of cold drink. Please also bring a packed lunch.  All tools and materials supplied. The venue has a sheltered workshop area in case of rain, and a composting toilet.

Please note that the meeting point is a 20 minute walk from Prudhoe train station, or a 15 minute walk from villages of Ovingham/ Ovington. Please get in touch if accessibility would be an issue: info@whittledenecic.co.uk

This event is for people aged 18 years and over.
